Quayle-Bentsen debate: Quayle as president?
Even through the grainy ‘80s footage, you still notice Dukakis’s incredulous stare as he takes in the first question. The moderator’s damn lucky Dukakis kept his composure and answered in good faith, because he easily could’ve clapped back instead (as others rightly point out).
Unreal moment
That famous quip was written for Ronald Reagan, by speech-writer and humorist Doug Gamble, for a speech that he gave a few weeks prior to this debate with Walter Mondale. "He put it in his pocket, saved it for the debate and surprised everybody,” Doug recalled. With this rhetorical pirouette, Reagan not only dismissed any doubt he was unfit for a second term, he also turned his Achilles’ Heel into a rabbit’s foot. Weakness became strength. Doug Gamble wrote jokes for Reagan, Bush, John McCain, and Donald Trump among other Republican politicians.
Even Mondale had to laugh. Gorgeous.
I remember Mondale being interviewed shortly after this. He couldn't believe his good luck that Reagan made this mistake.
Shown with Days of Thunder
Genius response
The moderator is NBC's John Chancellor.
❤❤❤❤❤
The funniest part is Mondale laughing over it. Then he gives a glance of admiration. Times were different.
Still would make a better president than Biden
Quayle really tried to force it, but that “pull a Clinton” line didn’t catch on. Fail!
Same old talking points, same old failure to follow through.
On this day, 40 years ago, as Gary Hart explained about his "new ideas", Walter Mondale reminded that of the "Where's the beef?" ad.
The moment when Reagan crushed a walk-off grand slam to seal victory.
Clinton le ganaba a Reagan si se postulaba
there is something in this short video even greater than President Reagan's witty comment, and that is Walter Mondale's very gracious reaction to it. perhaps from a tactical point of view, Mondale could have interrupted and insulted Reagan, but instead, he laughed at the comment because it was a funny one, and let people bask in it. this is perhaps the last time when the two main Presidential candidates were good, decent human beings who could make all of us feel proud to be an American
That was a good comeback but he really did start to decline rapidly in his second term. NO ONE OVER the age of 70 SHOULD BE PRESIDENT! There is a minimum age, let's get a rule about a maximum age.
True about the age requirement. By late 1986 into 87, Reagan started declining to the point where he lost interest in maintaining his standard duties as president amid the Iran-Contra Scandal. Reagan was lucky enough to only have one and a half years left in his second term, while Joe Biden started to show signs by early 2020, only serving three years left of his first term. The debate last night on June 30th with Trump was something that could have happened to Reagan had he tried a term in 1989 hypothetically amid growing Alzheimer's & dementia.
Mondale > Reagan
He lusted you know.
democrats take this question from a landslide defeat of an election where it made no difference and most Americans opposed the candidates stance and use this as proof the media is biased against them today.
now reagan had some zingers for yo ass, i will give him that. "i paid for this microphone" should be added to this one for the list of reagan's zingers for yo ass
Back when presidents could state full sentences.
Carter's face says it all. He was like: Yep, I just became the President.
In hindsight it was a dopey answer. The man was already suffering from alzheimer's. It was clearly evident during the first debate. His handlers prepared him for the question and gave him an answer.
Show us on the doll where Reagan touched you
Carter is a good man, one of the few people who deserves as long a life as he has lived
AND HE IS STILL ALIVE RIGHT NOW. Jimmy Carter is truly undefeated.
First off, this is why they lost the debate. Stocksdale and Gore largely talked about policy substance while Dan Quayle was going full Marco Rubio in repeating Clinton’s name like a 100 times. Also, it’s hilarious to see Dan Quayle accuse him of being a communist - Clinton to an extent continue the policies of his 2 Republican predecessors and many of his accomplishments were right wing.
He was ahead of his time. There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.
Even Carter himself said that the interview for Playboy magazine nearly cost him the election.
reagen..... the worst president of modern day US history..... mondale was so based for that call out. you can see it in reagans face. he wasn't fighting a weakling like carter... sadly he had to get shot and not fucking die.. .that right there bascially gave him the white house for another 4 years fuck this monster I hope he's burning in hell
The most fucked up question of all time.
Everything is wrong with that- a terrible candidate, a horrible person Good riddance to bad rubbish
Mrs Mondale was the one who first said, 'Where's the Beef?'
There was no, funny or confused look on President Carter's face and there never will be under a Biden Administration.
At 0:42, the look on Reagan’s face. He must’ve been thinking, Damn I really am going to lose Minnesota to Mondale after all.
Oh damn this was filmed at my work
The Mondale campaign was ready for Reagan to use that line again. Pretty much everything Mondale said in this campaign turned out to be true even if it wasn’t popular at the time. Reagan was a terrible president. RIP Fritz.

I love this. Two actual statesmen having a mostly respectful debate dealing with issues and each other's voting records. No matter which candidate you may have favored, you wouldn't have thought that the other one was an existential threat to our country, just the slightly less desirable choice. I miss these days.
Damn, Bill with the roasts
I MISS Ronald❤️❤️best ever and so witty!
Carter jumped from the frying pan to the fire with his support of gay marriage. Makes the Playboy interview seem mild.
Walter Mondale suffered the second biggest defeat in U.S. election history receiving only 13 electoral votes in the 1984 campaign. The worst in U.S. history was in 1912 when William H Taft lost in a landslide to Woodrow Wilson receiving only 8 electoral votes.
Damn, I haven't seen this. Good like by Dukakis haha
"If I put my foot deeper into my mouth, it will come out the other side."
Reagan did tell the truth, he wasnt going to raise taxes....but as it later showed that his Trickle Down Economics was a failure by bleeding the country try in favor or corporations.....it forced his succeasor George Bush to do a tax hike which led to a recession and ousted after 4 years in office.
So true comrade Ford!
Btw The 1987 tax reform bill Reagan signed In it cut VA funding!!!!!!!
Reagan also said to Carter, “it wasn’t Medicare he was opposed to in the 60s it was some of the language in the bill” And he also said we would lose our freedoms if we had Medicare, and unemployment ins was paid vacation
